For nearly a hundred years, this barbershop has played the role of a community meeting point in the village of Teror, Gran Canaria – a reference spot that is now inexorably vanishing. Pepito, the eighty-two year old barber, is at the end of his working life, and although friends do continue to visit, life in the shop slowly becomes less busy. As he attends to fewer and fewer clients he spends more time alone.
Francesca Phillips is a filmmaker and photographer whose work draws on anthropology. Under the umbrella of Francesca Phillips Films she produced Written in the Wind, a documentary on the whistling language of La Gomera, commissioned by Al Jazeera, Qatar. The film won Best Anthropology Documentary at the Jade Kunlun Awards, China. White Monks: A life in Shadows, an in-depth photographic portrait of life inside the strict and enclosed monastic order of the Trappists, has been exhibited in the UK and Spain. It is accompanied by a limited edition artist´s book held in private collections and International libraries. A documentary in production now is due to be completed in 2016.
