Can a tree grow in the air without taking roots in the earth? It is around this question that the poem by the young Iranian Roya Eshraghi gravitates and develops in this short film, inspired by an unusual discovery whilst walking around La Habana; a solitary tree growing on the fifth floor of a dilapidated building, an image as unusual as it is powerful. The film bourgeons into a beautiful letter to her father and into a summary of her own emancipation, the image of a tree feeding from the sky in a city on the horizon.
Roya Eshraghi was born in Iran in 1985. In 2000, she moved to Costa Rica, where she studied Social Anthropology. In 2010, she made her first short film, Playing with Sand, in memory of her brother. In 2015, she graduated from EICTV, the Sant Antonio de los Baños International School of Cinema and Television, specialising in documentaries. Her filmography comprises: Nothing and No One (short documentary, 2015), Derakht (The Tree) (short film, 2015), Lorenza, the Radio and You (short film, 2014), Yadbood (Remembrance) (short film, 2014), Endless (short film, 2012), Nostalgia nocturna (short film, 2012).
